"SMART for GREEN 2020" symbolic logo

DOCOMO, through its business involving mobile phones and services, implements measures to protect the global environment. In January 2011, "SMART for GREEN 2020" was introduced as a mid- to long-term environmental vision up to fiscal 2020. By helping to realize a low-carbon society, shape a recycling-based society and protect biodiversity, DOCOMO is contributing to human livelihoods and sustainable development.

Realizing a low-carbon society

Through energy saving and the use of renewable energy, DOCOMO develops services and solutions centered on mobile phones, while DOCOMO employees and their families come together as one to contribute to creating a low-carbon society.

Shaping a recycling-based society

DOCOMO is contributing to the effort to shape a recycling-based society by the recycling and reuse of business equipment, and by reducing consumption of paper-based resources through the expanded use of ICT solutions.

Protecting biodiversity

Having developed a deep understanding of the relationship between biodiversity and business activities, DOCOMO devises initiatives that help to protect biodiversity for future generations.

DOCOMO is pursuing the practical utilization of next-generation green base stations that are particularly useful during disasters and friendly to the environment. Compared to conventional base stations that operate on commercial power from electric utilities, these advanced base stations consume reduced amounts of commercial electricity through the use of solar panels, wind-power generation equipment, fuel cells and green power controller technology. They also are equipped with lithium-ion batteries that store electricity for use during disasters and other power outages and spikes in public power demand. DOCOMO is also making progress with its development of a system that renders power distribution to base stations nationwide visible, and research and development of an internal smart grid framework to control the distribution of power among multiple green base stations.

Green procurements carried out with the cooperation of suppliers enable DOCOMO to use products that are safe and have reduced impact on the environment. For newly procured products, DOCOMO undertakes environmental impact evaluations and requests suppliers to comply with the RoHS protocol and other conditions.

The FOMA eco solar panel 01, which DOCOMO introduced in February 2011, is a solar recharger that can fully recharge a FOMA handset in about 4.5 hours in good weather. DOCOMO helps to reduce CO2 emissions by encouraging customers to utilize clean solar energy when recharging their mobile phones. The recharger can be used outdoors where there is no electrical power, or during disasters. Through such products, DOCOMO and its customers are actively engaged in saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions.

TOUCH WOOD SH-08C

The TOUCH WOOD SH-08C, a mobile phone that DOCOMO launched in March 2011, features a body made of wood thinnings from Japanese cypress trees. The phone is a joint project with the NGO more trees, Olympus and Sharp Corporation. The trees are from the Shimanto River basin in Kochi Prefecture, where more trees conducts conservation efforts. Three dimensional compression processing technology from Olympus enables the handset to retain the texture, scent and warmth of real wood, and offer excellent durability and resistance to water, insect damage and mold. DOCOMO is also moving ahead with the use of other environmentally friendly materials in its mobile phones, such as recyclable ABS resin and plant-derived plastics.

Image of recycling mobile phones

Considering that mobile phones contain non-renewable natural resources such as gold, silver, copper and palladium, DOCOMO began collecting used mobile phones to recycle these valuable materials in 1998. In 2001, DOCOMO and the Telecommunications Carriers Association (TCA) created the Mobile Recycle Network to collect mobile phones irrespective of brands and/or manufacturers. Mobile phones now are collected at DOCOMO Shops and many other locations. Going forward, DOCOMO will continue to collect used mobile phones and publicize the importance of recycling.

The NTT DOCOMO Group launched the "docomo Woods" program in 1999 to encourage greater in-house awareness of environmental protection and volunteering. Under the program, employees and their families interact with nature by working in forests to clear brush and so on. Activities had taken place in all 47 prefectures across Japan as of June 2010. DOCOMO will continue to carry out this initiative to help protect of the natural environment and preserve biodiversity.

In cooperation with the PLDT Group, a capital affiliate, DOCOMO is carrying out forestation activities in the Philippines to reduce CO2 emissions and protect biodiversity. Activities are funded by a portion of the proceeds earned from selling materials recovered from used mobile phones. By turning in their old mobile phones, customers help to preserve the environment and conserve non-renewable resources.
