What kind of service is docomo Money Transfer?

This service enables individual subscribers of 20 years of age or older who use FOMA/Xi and subscribe to i-mode/sp-mode to make overseas remittances through the docomo Money Transfer i-mode site. Remittances can be made in U.S. dollars or a local currency to a designated overseas bank account or to be received at the counter of a financial institution. In the Philippines, remittances can also be made to Smart Money.

  • noticeRemittances can be made only from within Japan.

Does this service require prior application etc.?

Prior usage registration is required for this service. After you request an application form for usage registration by phone or via i-mode, the application form will be sent by post to the subscriber address of your mobile phone subscription. Only the line subscriber can apply. Also, only the phone number of the mobile phone from which the application form was requested can be registered. Please enclose a copy of your identification document and post the completed application back to DOCOMO. Once your application is checked and registered, a Message R will be sent to notify you that service usage registration has been completed. Every time you use the service, you will need to enter your network PIN for verification and agree to the terms of use.
Note that remittances will be made using a "docomo Keitai Soukin"(docomo Mobile Remittance) account. You must read and agree to the docomo Keitai Terms of Use and Precautions on the docomo Keitai Soukin site to use a docomo account.

What identification documents are accepted?

Japanese nationals Japanese driver's license Must be issued by a prefectural or metropolitan Public Safety Commission. (International driver's licenses are not accepted.)

  • noticeIdentification documents are accepted on the conditions that they include a photo of the applicant's face and show the applicant's address, and that the document itself is valid. The conditions for identification verification documents for this service differ from those for new mobile phone subscription.
  • noticeThe name and address written on the usage registration application form must match both the subscriber name and address of the mobile phone line and the name and address shown on the identification document.
  • noticeOn the usage registration application form, write the phone number of the mobile phone from which the application form was requested.

How long will it take until I can use the service after I send the application form and identification documents?

It will take about one week, unless there are errors or omissions in your application.
We undertake a fixed screening process for this service in accordance with the relevant laws, such as the Act on Settlement.

How are remittances made (and received)?

Sending

Please make remittance instructions from the docomo Money Transfer i-mode site on iMenu/sp-mode site on dMenu, entering the details of the remittance, such as the payee's details and the remittance amount.
If you choose to have the remittance received at the counter, please notify the payee of the password that was issued upon completion of remittance instructions.

Receiving

Deposit into account: The remittance will be transferred into the bank account designated by the remitter (please select an affiliated beneficiary financial institution).
Receipt at counter: The remittance can be collected at the counter of the financial institution that the remitter designated when making remittance instructions (please select an affiliated beneficiary financial institution). The payee must visit the counter of the financial institution in person with his or her identification. Please present your identification documents at the counter of the financial institution and inform the teller of the password provided by the remitter.

How much is the transaction fee?

The transaction fee is ¥1,000 (non-taxable) per transaction regardless of the remittance amount.

  • noticeWhen a remittance is received, a separate handling fee may apply at the local financial institution.
  • noticeThe transaction fee will not be refunded even if there was a mistake in the remittance instructions or the recipient did not receive the money.

What currencies can I make a remittance in?

Remittances can be made in U.S. dollars or the local currency of the destination country. However, currencies handled depend on the beneficiary financial institution.

What is the exchange rate?

The rate is updated at 11:00 a.m. every day except weekends and public holidays. You can confirm the rate when checking your remittance instructions.
However, transfer limits are prescribed by each eligible country and region, and the limits per country and region will take priority. For details, please check the maximum amount remittable per country on the transfer instruction screen of i-mode/sp-mode site or on "Special Conditions for docomo Money Transfer". However, if the limits listed on "Special Conditions for docomo Money Transfer" and the transfer instruction screen of i-mode/sp-mode site are different, the transfer instruction screen of i-mode/sp-mode site will take priority.

Is there a limit to the number and value of remittances that I can make?

You can make remittances of ¥7,000 or more, in increments of one yen, and a monthly remittance limit of ¥500,000 and daily remittance limit of ¥450,000 applies.
(Cumulative remittance amounts will be reset at the beginning of each month.)

How many letters can I enter for the payee's name?

The first name, middle name, and last name can each contain up to 32 alphabetical letters (including spaces between names).

What items are necessary to receive the remittance in cash at the counter of an affiliated financial institution?

The payee must visit the counter of the beneficiary financial institution in person with his or her identification document. Please present your identification document at the counter of the financial institution and inform the teller of the password that was issued to the remitter upon completion of remittance instructions.

When will the remittance be transferred to the bank account?

After making remittance instructions, data on the remittance instructions will be notified to the local financial institution, but we do not know the timing of the transfer as it differs depending on the country of the payee, time differences, and the business hours of the financial institution. Please ask the payee to inquire with the beneficiary financial institution as to whether the transfer was completed.

Is it possible to register the beneficiary bank account for future use?

It is not possible to register the beneficiary bank account for future use.
You can make remittance instructions for the same payee using the same method of receipt from Overseas Remittance History or from the Message R informing you of the receipt of remittance instructions.

When and how will the remittance amount and transaction fee be billed?

Each time remittance instructions are made, the transaction fee is deducted from the amount withdrawn from your docomo kouza (account).

Can my free communications allowance be used to cover the remittance amount and transaction fee?

Free communications allowances do not apply to remittance amounts or transaction fees.

I changed a mobile phone to a smart phone, and meanwhile switched from i-mode to an sp-mode account. Do I need to reapply for docomo Money Transfer?

The information you've registered with docomo Money Transfer will automatically be transferred, so there's no need to reapply. You can also review your remittance history on the site, just as before.
