5G Research and Development

Aiming at service launch in 2020, NTT DOCOMO is conducting research and development on 5G, the fifth-generation mobile communications system. In the information society of 2020s, the traffic volume of mobile communications is expected to be over 1000-times than that of 2010. 5G aims to realize a high capacity network which is able to support such increase in traffic with low cost and reduced power consumption. Furthermore, NTT DOCOMO is conducting research and development to enable a wide range of capabilities such as super high data rate communications of over 10Gbps, lower latency, and simultaneous connection of a large number of terminals in order to support the future spread of M2M communications and internet of things (IoT), etc.

GSMA Mobile World Congress 2016 (MWC 2016)

At the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2016, DOCOMO demonstrated its ongoing 5G activities, including its 5G radio access concept and candidate technologies, vision for future core network concept, and roadmap toward 2020 and beyond. The latest status and results of the ongoing experimental trials with twelve leading mobile technology vendors were also presented. For the experimental trial with Nokia at 70GHz band, a real-time demo using real-hardware equipment and a beam visualizer was conducted to show the benefits of beamforming techniques at the 70GHz band.


At CEATEC JAPAN 2013, NTT DOCOMO introduced the fifth-generation mobile communications system (5G) it is working on as the next network to LTE-Advanced. By using DOCOMO 5G real-time simulator, it demonstrated the world of 5G with high data rates, high capacity and low latency.
The exhibition was awarded 'CEATEC AWARD 2013 The Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award'.
