HSPA is a packet communications system, an expansion to the W-CDMA system, which combines HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) for enhancing the downlink data rates and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) for enhancing the uplink data rates. NTT DOCOMO launched the HSDPA service in August 2006 and has been supporting the maximum data rate of 14 Mbps in the downlink since June 2011. In June 2009, it launched the HSUPA service providing maximum data rate of 5.7 Mbps in the uplink.
