TOKYO, JAPAN, February 22, 2016 --- DENSO Corporation and NTT DOCOMO, INC. agreed today to undertake joint research and development of vehicle control systems that use LTE and 5G (the next-generation mobile communications system), in order to realize advanced driver assistance and automated driving systems.

DENSO has tested and evaluated mobile communications-based vehicle control, developed in-vehicle communications devices, and implemented other projects through research and development of technology for connections between vehicles and infrastructure, such as traffic lights, and between vehicles and other vehicles. NTT DOCOMO has been conducting research and development concerning vehicular communication using LTE and 5G to enable vehicles to interact with pedestrians and objects. The use of LTE and 5G is expected to provide higher-quality and speedier communications for vehicle control systems.

The two companies' combined technologies will be evaluated in simulators to confirm their performance in helping vehicles to safely merge onto expressways and travel through blind intersections. The experiment using real vehicles will be considered based on the simulators' results.

The two companies are looking forward to working together to develop technologies for advanced driver assistance and automated driving systems based on LTE and 5G.
