'Can access anytime, anywhere and with anyone'.
Key to realizing this is the efficient use of the spectrum which is a limited resource.
DOCOMO's R&D has been taking on this challenge with various technologies.

Evolution of the mobile communication network

network

DOCOMO'S R&D started research and development of the WCDMA system from the beginning of the 1990s. And in 2001, DOCMO started the FOMA service based on the 3rd generation mobile communication system. DOCOMO is currently engaged in enhancing the performance of FOMA terminals and enhancement of the overall FOMA system, thereby realizing more user-friendly and attractive services for the customers.

The world of broadband communication is expanding rapidly. With DOCOMO R&D's development activities of HSDPA, a radio system on the W-CDMA system for higher transmission speeds, DOCOMO started the service in 2006, and currently provides max. downlink transmission speed of 7.2Mbps.

DOCOMO's R&D is currently engaged in the research and development of Long Term Evolution, LTE, which will realize the downlink transmission speeds of over 100Mbps. LTE will evolve the existing 3rd generation mobile communication system and expand the opportunities for new mobile applications.
LTE will enable smooth migration to the 4th generation mobile communication systems by exploiting the innovative technologies for 4G in the spectrum allocated for 3G.

In the 4th generation, higher transmission speeds and more flexible system are the targets.
We aim at realizing the super high transmission speeds of max. 100Mbps for outdoors and max. 1Gbps for indoors, which significantly exceed the current systems. DOCOMO's R&D has already confirmed the basic performance and field experiments are also been conducted.
