Compliance Information on Radio Radiation Protection from Mobile Handsets

Radio waves emitted from smartphones and mobile phones/handsets are required to meet the limits of the local Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)*1 and Incident Power Density (IPD)*2, or Total Exposure Ratio (TER)*3, which were stipulated in the Radio Law*4, when handsets are used close to the human body*5. We are providing this information in order to

  • Help our customers better understand the intent of the law
  • Assure our customers of the safety of our smartphone and mobile handsets

the local SAR and other values for all models are published on our website.

*1 Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)
This value is calculated by averaging the energy absorbed in 10 g of any human tissue over any 6-minute period when exposed to an electromagnetic field. It is applied for frequency bands up to 6 GHz. The limit is 2 W/kg (4 W/kg for whole body).

*2 Incident Power Density (IPD)
This value is calculated by averaging the energy that passes through 4 square centimeters of any body surface over any 6-minute period. The limit is 2 mW/cm2.

*3 Total Exposure Ratio (TER)
This assessment value is applied when the frequency bands of radio waves emitted simultaneously are 6 GHz or below and above 6 GHz and when there is a mixture of local SAR and IPD. The limit is 1.

*4 Related laws
Article 14-2 of the Ordinance for Regulating Radio Equipment (Limits of Human Exposure to Radio Waves)
Ordinance on Technical Regulations Conformity Certification, etc. of Specified Radio Equipment (Appendix Table 1-1 (3))
Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Public Notice No. 324 of 2013 (Establishing the method to measure the SAR in the human body [except for both hands])
Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Public Notice No. 33 of 2019 (Establishing the method to measure the IPD in the human body [except for both hands])

*5 When used close to the human body
This is based on the assumptions that a handset is held against the side of the head for phone calls and that it is also used close to other parts of the body.

About SAR of Individual Products

The SAR information documents that are made available in English on this page relate exclusively to NTT DOCOMO’s handsets for International Roaming. These handsets fully comply with the government requirements* regarding exposure to radio waves. * As set by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, and the Council of the European Union.
